Span is no longer in beta

Trondheim, 2024-08-20

The Span service is transitioning to a paid model

Span will moves out of (the quite long) beta phase into a paid subscription model in a few weeks. We will start charging for the service from now on.

What changes?

Subscriptions are tied to organisations in Span. There are two kinds of organisations - your personal organisation and non-personal organisations. The non-personal organisations without an active subscription will be disabled.

Personal organisations without a subscription will be moved to the free tier.

If you have created more devices, data routers, firmware images and gateways than the subscription allows they will be disabled.

When will it happen?

From the 1st of September 2024 the limitations are introduced gradually. We start out with the message and blob retention. Starting next week we’ll gradually introduce the retention policies outlined on the pricing page. At first we’ll remove messages older than six months, then three months and so on.

If you want to keep the old messages or blobs in Span you should download them as soon as possible. Use the Span API to download messages.

The following week (on September 8th) we’ll apply the message retention policy of the organisation’s current subscription.

The same week 15th of September we’ll disable any resources that exceeds the subscription limits for the organisation. If you have an non-personal organisation without a subscription it will be disabled along with all devices, collection, firmware images and data routers.

What does it mean for me?

Disabled devices in Span will no longer be able to connect, send or receive data from Span. If you choose to do nothing your organisations (including the collections, devices, firmware images, data routers and gateways) will be disabled and remain inactive.

If you have only one or two active devices you can move them to your personal organisation and enable them there.

What are my options?

If you sign up to one of the subscriptions you won’t notice any changes except for the message rentention periods. If you need longer message retention than the standard plans, please contact us at contact@lab5e.com. We’re happy to discuss alternatives!
